A murder mystery that began with police finding dismembered body parts of a woman in a cooling canal in Ibrahimpatnam, Vijayawada– finally got solved through a tattoo on her wrist!
On September 18, the police found a woman’s torso in the cooling canal. The next day, the police recovered the woman’s remaining body parts– in pieces– including her head, legs and hands.
With no immediate identification available, the case posed a major challenge to investigators. Police then circulated details of the deceased on social media, highlighting a peacock-feather tattoo on her hand, her clothing and other identifying features.
Finally, what cracked the case open was the tattoo! The tattoo and other details led to the victim’s brother identifying the woman, providing a crucial breakthrough in the investigation.
The police have arrested a man in connection with the sensational murder of 29-year-old Karri Durga, alias Kalyani. Police said a dispute over money and the woman’s adopted son allegedly led to the murder.
The deceased, a native of Chinna Tadinada village in Kalidindi mandal of Eluru district, had been living in Mangalagiri, Guntur district, for some time. While working at a hotel, she reportedly became acquainted with the owner and entered into a relationship with him.
She later gave birth to a boy. After their relationship ended due to differences, Durga gave the child up for adoption to Shaik Shafi, a meat trader from HB Colony in Bhavanipuram. Shafi already had three daughters and reportedly became deeply attached to the boy.
Police said Durga later repeatedly demanded that Shafi return the child to her and also give her money, leading to frequent arguments between the two.
As the alleged harassment continued, Shafi reportedly decided to kill her. According to police, he sent his family members out of the house and called Durga home on September 17 under a pretext.
During another argument over money and the child, Shafi allegedly attacked Durga with a butcher knife, killing her. He then allegedly sought the help of his friend Shaik Abdullah alias Durgarao to dismember the body and dispose of the parts at different locations in the Cooling Canal.
Police examined CCTV footage, suspicious vehicle movements and other technical evidence to trace the suspects. Officials said artificial intelligence and social media were also used to help crack the case despite the lack of initial clues.
The prime accused, Shaik Shafi, was arrested at his residence in Bhavanipuram. His alleged accomplice, Shaik Abdullah alias Durgarao, is currently absconding.
ACP Durgarao said senior police officials appreciated the Ibrahimpatnam police team for swiftly solving the case.
