The house she has left behind is a piece of film history. Then estate belonged to director Cecil B. DeMille, considered one of the founding fathers of classic cinema. Jolie bought it in 2017 for $24.5 million after her separation from Pitt—a little more than what she received after having to lower the price by $5 million when it went on the market last May. Spanning 11,000 square feet, the home features six bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a gym, a library, a pool, and gardens overlooking the iconic Griffith Observatory. Of all these features, what Jolie liked most was the tranquility: “There is no entertainment room, but lots of pathways and places to walk and think,” she told the British edition of Vogue in 2021.
Although she doesn’t currently plan to have a permanent home (“I’d like to be a bit nomadic for a while,” she said recently), her top destination would be Cambodia, a country with which she has maintained a close relationship ever since she filmed the movie Tomb Raider among the temples of Siem Reap in 2000, and discovered the reality of the country in the wake of the Khmer Rouge regime. From there, she brought home her first son, Maddox, in 2002, whom she adopted from an orphanage in Battambang. In 2005, King Norodom Sihamoni granted her a Cambodian passport in recognition of her humanitarian work through her foundation, the Maddox Foundation, her promotion of UN projects, and her 2017 film First They Killed My Father, which recounts the memoirs of Cambodian genocide survivor Loung Ung.
