Anne Hathaway’s controversial movie Yesteryear is moving forward, despite the storm already surrounding it. Based on Caro Claire Burke‘s bestselling debut novel of the same name, Hathaway will star and also produce the film.
The Interstellar star recently attended an early screening of her upcoming movie, Verity. In a red carpet interview with Deadline, Hathaway was asked for an update on the adaptation of Yesteryear. The star said, “I was just reading the script earlier today, and it’s just — Hannah Friedman is doing such an amazing job in the adaptation process. It’s so rich, and it’s so complicated. I think it is another story about somebody who makes you feel uncomfortable.”
Hathaway also spoke about the most exciting part of working on the Yesteryear adaptation. She said, “I am excited to explore a world that is so different than the one that I live in, nd I’m really always excited about scarring audiences. I don’t know, I feel like I really like doing that.”
However, as stated above, this book has already received major backlash for its satirical ambitions, its reliance on shock value, and its ending. Moreover, a baseless rumor suggested that Hathaway had ghostwritten the book, which Burke later debunked.
What to know about Amazon MGM’s Yesteryear adaptation
Amazon MGM Studios is currently developing the adaptation, with a screenplay from Emmy winner Friedman, best known for The Muppets Mayhem, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Willow.
The story follows Hathaway as Natalie Heller Mills, a successful “tradwife” social media influencer. Natalie is mysteriously transported back in time to the year 1855. Without modern conveniences, the influencer is forced to confront the realities of the life she romanticized online.
Alongside starring, Hathaway is also set to produce the movie via her Somewhere Pictures banner. Other producers include Adam Shulman, Suzan Bymel, and Guymon Casady. The movie is still in the early stages of production, with no other cast members or a director announced.
