Almost a month after Prime Video cancelled the Nicolas Cage-led Spider-Noir, they are close to greenlighting a very unexpected adaptation of one of Spider-Man’s most controversial storylines. Per Deadline, Sony and Amazon are developed a series based on the infamous Clone Saga of the 1990s comics.
The original Clone Saga was a title-wide crossover of the Spider-Man titles which saw Peter Parker meet Ben Reilly, a clone who had apparently lived his own life, choosing a name that combined Uncle Ben with May Parker’s maiden name, and all of Peter’s spider abilities as the Scarlet Spider. However, Ben claimed that he was the original and the Peter Parker fans knew was the clone all along in a vast conspiracy involving a huge number of Spider-Man’s villains.
Due to all of the red tape between Sony and Marvel over Spider-Man’s rights, the Clone Saga show will take major liberties with the source material by adapting the second arc of the saga which focused on Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker, an imperfect and flawed clone of Spider-Man. Even then, Deadline reports their origins as clones or even their identities could be altered for the series.
The Clone Saga series comes from Kelvin Yu (American Born Chinese) with him, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller executive producing. Should it be officially greenlit, it will also premiere on MGM+ first followed by a release on Prime Video.
Audiences will already know the name Ben Reilly as Spider-Noir changed Cage’s Spider-Man from Peter Parker to Ben Reilly. Despite the character’s popularity from the Spider-Verse animated films and the acclaim of both the show and Cage’s performance, the series was cancelled though Amazon and Sony stated they were developing other series under their deal to use Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters and potentially expand the idea of the Spider-Verse further. This is after Sony’s many failed attempts to launch their own Spider-Man universe without the heroic wallcrawler where, with the exception of the Venom trilogy, every Sony Universe of Marvel Characters film flopped at the box office and among audiences.
