John Galliano is bringing his particular brand of couture alchemy to Zara, without the couture price tag. The British designer’s first Re{form} Zara collection arrives Oct. 1 at 1 a.m. PT/4 a.m. ET (10 a.m. CEST) with prices starting at $29.90.
This kicks off a two-year partnership that puts an unusual premise at the center of the designer collaboration: Galliano isn’t simply designing a new collection for Zara. He’s taking garments from the retailer’s past seasons and pulling them apart, shifting their proportions and rebuilding them through his own design vocabulary.
Given John Galliano’s name recognition, the collection’s relatively accessible price point and the anticipation surrounding his return to a major global retailer, expect some of the most sought-after pieces to move quickly.
In Galliano’s hands, that means even the most ordinary Zara pieces are fair game. A lace-trimmed slip dress moves upward on the body until it becomes an extravagant jabot at the neck. A cotton shirt, sized up several times over, becomes a jacket with a trompe l’oeil leather print. On a wool-blend coat, pockets migrate backward, lapels grow and the hemline stretches into tails.
The transformations are dramatic, but the techniques behind them are familiar Galliano territory. Bias cutting, transparent layers of tulle, technical tailoring and historical dress references run throughout Re{form}, alongside cropped tailcoats, clinging dresses and elongated bicorne hats. Several silhouettes look back to Les Incroyables, the dandies of post-revolutionary France who also inspired Galliano’s 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation collection, which helped launch his career.

For a more recent reference point, look no further than Maison Margiela.
Galliano’s spring 2024 Artisanal couture show for the house became one of the defining fashion moments of that year. Staged beneath Paris’ Pont Alexandre III, the theatrical collection sent models down the runway in extreme corsetry, sheer dresses and dramatically manipulated silhouettes. Pat McGrath’s porcelain-like “glass doll” makeup became nearly as talked-about as the clothes, inspiring a wave of social media recreations and tutorials.
Re{form} is obviously operating on a very different scale, but the fascination with transforming the familiar remains. This time, instead of couture ateliers starting from scratch, Galliano’s raw material includes the kind of Zara shirt or slip dress that might already be hanging in someone’s closet.
The timing also gives Re{form} an added layer of significance. In August, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Galliano announced that John Galliano: Horizons, a Costume Institute exhibition planned for spring 2027, would no longer move forward. Just weeks later, his next major fashion chapter is unfolding somewhere very different: Zara.
Against that backdrop, Zara represents a considerably more mainstream platform for Galliano’s work. The partnership is expected to span seasonal collections over two years, with the retailer describing the project as an exercise in deconstructing and reconfiguring clothes from its previous seasons into new designs.
And while a Galliano-designed Dior couture piece sold for 663,000 euros earlier this year, entry into Re{form} requires considerably less commitment.
