There might never be a new “New Girl” reunion or reboot, but Zooey Deschanel is still singing a happy tune across California.
Deschanel, the star of the popular Fox TV show, cast serious doubt on a possible reboot in an interview with the California Post this week, citing “complicated legal stuff” that could get in the way.
“I just don’t think that’s gonna happen, but, you know, anything could happen,” Deschanel said ahead of her indie pop band She & Him’s sold-out shows in California. “But I don’t think that’s gonna happen.”
“I think it’s something everyone’s kind of having fun, kind of joking about, but there’s a lot of complicated legal stuff to putting a reunion together,” she added.
Deschanel, 46, has dedicated much of her life to the arts.
Known for her roles in “Elf” and “500 Days of Summer,” Deschanel spent her summer focusing on her music by touring and songwriting.
“Well, I have to have an instrument,” Deschanel said with a laugh about her writing process. “I don’t usually go somewhere because I have to be by myself. I usually write at my piano, but sometimes I write on my guitar, and I spend a lot of time gathering lyrical inspiration before, I sit down to write.”
As for her acting, Deschanel starred as middle school teacher Jessica Day for 146 episodes on the TV show, which earned five Emmy nominations during its time on the air from 2011 until 2018.
She explained she would work with fellow “New Girl” stars Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone, Lamorne Morris, Jake Johnson, and Damon Wayans Jr. again “in a heartbeat,” but noted it would require plenty of moving parts coming together to bring it to reality.
“[The show] connected with people in a way where it felt comforting and something that people wanted to watch again and again,” the actor/singer continued. “I’m proud of it, and I definitely see with fans that they are still connecting with it, so that’s so nice. I know we’re all very appreciative of that.”
While the cast doesn’t get together as often as they’d like, Deschanel said they will next month at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball to receive the Rising Phoenix Award in Hollywood.
“I love seeing everybody,” the mom of two said. “I spent so much time with them doing the show, so it was really fun. It’s always fun to see everyone. I see everybody here and there separately, but it’s rare that we’re all together at once, so it’s going to be fun to see everyone.”
Shooting more “New Girl” episodes isn’t on Deschanel’s schedule, but she’s still quite booked.
Between being on the road this summer with band member M. Ward and the release of her latest comedic drama, “Trash Mountain,” at the Toronto International Film Festival, Deschanel has been busy.
“I always love my LA shows,” the Los Angeles native said of her Oct. 2 and 3 gigs at The Orpheum Theater. “And then getting to do San Francisco. We’ve already done a bunch of great shows on the East Coast and up the Pacific Northwest. So yeah, it’s gonna be good ending it in California.”
“This tour, we’re going back to all the original stuff, like our “Volume” records which are all songs I mostly wrote except for a few covers,” Deschanel said of the “Pump Up the Volumes” tour. “It’s just kind of returning to our original She & Him stuff.”
