Right now, it’s anyone’s guess when Fallout 5 might arrive. However, we do know it’s happening, somewhere in the bowels of Bethesda, and one former developer from the studio believes taking the franchise out of the US would be a welcome shot in the arm.
Chatting to Insider Gaming, Bruce Nesmith, a quest designer on Fallouts 3 and 4, lead designer on Skyrim and design director on Oblivion Remaster, believes there’s enormous potential in taking the property fully international. “It can go to any city that has a really distinctive style to it. You look at the places they’ve already taken Fallout and it’s Las Vegas, Washington DC, Boston and they’re all places full of style,” he says.
“It would be very tempting to go outside of the country too even though Fallout is highly rooted in Americana,” he adds.

London and Paris, the capitals of England and France, respectively, are two examples that “could be amazing,” he mentions. And those would definitely be easy candidates here, offering large, sprawling metropolises for the devs to turn into post-apocalyptic wastelands. But they’re too easy, in my view.
Head up to the Scottish Highlands, or over to Ireland. Or maybe some part of Australia. Each would be fascinating to see in this context. His point about Fallout being firmly planted in American culture can still echo through these locales in fascinating ways.
Imagine the culture clash of a post-nuclear Glasgow, where the city’s now-mayor is an Elvis obsessive. Or the locals believe themselves to be in some distant state because American culture is all they had access to for generations. In some ways that wouldn’t be too far removed from modern day whenever Country 2 Country happens in the dear green place.
The possibilities are endless. Todd Howard’s been clear the series is unlikely to go outside North America, but never say never. Although, really, I think we all just want the thing to happen at all, regardless of what the setting is.
