10 live events and films for October: Macklemore, Cork fests, Paul Brady…

Digger, October 2: Tom Cruise stars in heavy make-up in Digger from Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu ( The Revenant, Birdman). He plays Digger Rockwell , the most powerful man in the world, on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour, before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.

The Foundations singer is on a run of intimate Irish shows this month. It comes ahead of her sixth studio album Cailín, due in January, in which the London-born singer explores her Irish heritage.

Kyla Cobbler, Cork Opera House, October 6-7: The fast-rising comedian Kyla Cobbler returns to Cork with the Not My Lemons tour and after releasing a memoir last month entitled, Happy, Thank You. More, Please.

The Social Reckoning, October 9: A sort of sequel to The Social Network (2010), The Social Reckoning is written and directed by Aaron Sorkin and examines the 2021 Facebook whistleblower leaks. Jeremy Strong stars as Mark Zuckerberg alongside Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, and Bill Burr.

Kristin Hersh, Cyprus Avenue, Cork, October 13: Best known as the founder of Throwing Muses, Hersh has spent more than three decades forging a fiercely independent career. Her latest album Sugar On Blackstone was released in September.

Paul Brady, Cork Opera House, October 15-16: 

The legendary guitarist plays two nights at the Opera House. From folk standards such as Arthur McBride to the likes of The Island and Nobody Knows, Brady’s catalogue spans more than four decades.

Klara and the Sun, October 23: Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling novel, Klara and the Sun is directed by Taika Waititi and stars Jenna Ortega as an Artificial Friend who forms an unexpected bond with a teenage girl, played by Mia Tharia.

Another genre-spanning programme this year includes Yussef Dayes, Annie Mac, Berlioz, Masters At Work, KOKOROKO, and Boney M. Alongside the ticketed shows, the Music Trail and Big Fringe will bring free performances and pop-up gigs to every corner of Cork.

Macklemore, 3Arena, Dublin, October 26: 

Macklemore opens his Free Palestine tour in Dublin, having been unceremoniously kicked off of Ed Sheeran’s US tour last month. The concerts will bring Macklemore together with artists and friends for a series of performances that centre Palestine and Palestinians, and help provide humanitarian aid and support to the movement.

Disco Pigs, The Everyman, From October 31: Thirty years after premiering, launching the careers of Enda Walsh, Cillian Murphy, and Eileen Walsh, Disco Pigs returns in a major new production at The Everyman. Directed by Walsh, Séamus McLean Ross and Aoise Meaney take the lead roles.
