One of the finest Scandi noirs, with Sofie Grabol as the sweater-sporting Sarah Lund
Year: 2007-2012
Certificate: 15
This superior Danish detective drama had a huge impact on the TV landscape, spawning an American copycat series, influencing the style of our home-grown crime dramas, being spoofed on comedy shows, and even sparking a Scandinavian knitwear revival.
It lasted for three series, and our heroine for all of them is sweater-sporting investigator Sarah Lund (Sofie Grabol). The 20-part first series opens on surprisingly bouncy form, with Lund sporting a Viking helmet at her leaving party. The upbeat mood doesn’t last, as she is pulled into the case of a missing 19-year-old woman.
The shorter, ten-part second series is set two years later, and finds Lund demoted to working as a border guard – but then she’s pulled back in to probe the death of a military adviser.
The final third series (also ten parts) opens with something terrible happening on board a cargo ship – something that later results in body parts being found at Copenhagen dock. Lund is celebrating 25 years in the police force at this point, and looking forward to a new, quieter job – but her plans are once again put on hold as she is drawn into a case that will lead to some very dark places indeed.
