In 1984, Anna Domino released the five-track mini-album East And West on Les Disques du Crépuscule, the Belgian indie label that often collaborated with Tony Wilson’s renowned Factory Records. The Tokyo-born artist was living in downtown New York and communicating the aura of the neighborhood through swimmy avant-pop daydreams. Now, East And West is getting a reissue from, appropriately, Domino.
East And West cemented Domino as an underground icon, with acts like Clairo, James K, HTRK, Carla Del Forno, Astrid Sonne, Horsegirl, and Smerz citing her as an influence. The East And West reissue compiles the original tracks with key singles from the period alongside seven unreleased demos, newly digitized from Anna’s original four-track tapes. “Happy To Go” is out today, and it comes with a video featuring rare archival photographs of late ’70s and early ’80s New York City taken by Domino herself.
