Sean Gunn has read the script for Man of Tomorrow, and apparently his brother James Gunn will be serving, what he thinks, is his best movie yet.
Sean has been along for a huge chunk of James Gunn’s comic book movie career. He played Kraglin and served as the on-set physical performer for Rocket Raccoon in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and he’s now part of the DCU as Maxwell Lord. So when he says Man of Tomorrow is his favorite movie his brother has made, that is sure to get some attention.
Asked how the upcoming film compares with James Gunn’s Marvel and DC projects, Sean told ComicBook:
“It weighs everything on it. Because I can tell you: I can’t say anything about Man of Tomorrow in terms of what it’s about or who’s in it, or whatever.
“But I think it’s okay that I can say that I’ve read it, and it’s my favorite of all of them. So I’ll be very curious to come back a year from now and talk to people about what they like the best.”
That’s some serious praise considering the movies James Gunn has made over the years, particularly his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy.
Sean doesn’t look at the Marvel and DC films as rivals, though. For him, the goal is simply to make movies audiences enjoy.
“I also want to say: it’s not a competition. I’m so proud of the Guardians movies and the role I played there, and I think that I root for all of them.
“You just want the stories to be good; you want the products to be good; you don’t want to be like, ‘This is better than that!’ It’s more like this is for the audience that loves this; and the audience that loves this [other franchise], loves this. And let’s just keep trying to tell good stories and bring everybody into the fold.”
Man of Tomorrow will serve as a quasi-sequel to Superman, with Clark Kent and Lex Luthor forced to team up against Brainiac. That pairing alone should make for a fun dynamic, especially after everything that played out between Superman and Lex in the first film.
Sean Gunn obviously can’t spill any story details yet, but saying that Man of Tomorrow his favorite James Gunn movie gives DC fans something to get excited about while we wait to see what Superman, Lex, and Brainiac are getting themselves into.
Man of Tomorrow hits theaters July 9, 2027.
