Nearly 3 In 4 Sudden Infant Deaths Linked To Unsafe Sleep: Is Your Baby At Risk?

Preventing sudden unexpected infant deaths due to unsafe sleeping situations and environments is something almost wholly avoidable. As per the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are several active measures parents and caregivers can take in order to ensure the baby sleeps safe and sound. First and foremost, babies must be placed flat on their backs – even for short naps during the day; frequent check-ins to make sure they haven’t flipped over on their side or stomach are also strongly recommended. As for the mattress, it must be firm and flat while the crib or bassinet it is placed inside must meet safety standards. Infant beds tend to get crowded with pillows, toys, bumper pads and blankets – instead, make sure that at the time of sleeping, their area is relatively free. Finally, it’s prudent to have the infant sleep in the same room as the parents, on a separate surface, for at least the first 6 moths of its life.
