Quentin Tarantino’s First Movie Sequel Officially Arrives Next Month

Seven years after the fact, Quentin Tarantino’s period action-drama Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is getting an official sequel, just not one directed by Tarantino himself. Seven and Fight Club director David Fincher is helming the direct sequel instead with a new story that focuses on Brad Pitt’s stuntman character Cliff Booth. We got our first look at The Adventures of Cliff Booth back in February, when Netflix released a teaser trailer for the sequel. Soon, we’ll get the movie itself, as Cliff Booth is set to return in November.

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth — previously known simply as The Adventures of Cliff Booth — will make its Netflix debut on Dec. 23, but audiences will have a chance to see it in theaters much sooner.

Fincher and Tarantino fans will get an early look at the film in November. Netflix has an exclusive two-week run in IMAX theaters starting Nov. 25. So if you want to see what a Fincher-led sequel to Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood looks like on the biggest screen, you have a limited window.

Pitt will reprise his Best Supporting Actor Academy Award-winning role as Cliff Booth in the film. While the original film was set in 1969, the sequel will take place in 1977 in “a very different Hollywood,” Netflix says. The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis, and Karren Karagulian. Fincher directed from a script written by Tarantino, the latter of which has not revealed his 10th and final film-directing project.

We praise the original film in this unusual two-part movie series back in 2019. Critic Karen Han said at the time, “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood is easily the quietest and most meditative of [Tarantino’s] works, ending with a startlingly soft and sweet moment that contextualizes everything that came before it as, ultimately, a love letter.”

Tarantino has a novelization of Cliff Booth’s further adventures coming as well. That book is titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth and will be released by book publisher HarperCollins on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
