Cult hit teen drama starring Sharon Rooney and Jodie Comer
Year: 2013-2015
Certificate: 15
Sharon Rooney won a Scottish Bafta for her confident and sensitive portrayal of troubled teenager Rae in this E4 series from the 2010s. With its cool soundtrack and comic book-style visual sense, the 1990s-set show was quite the cult hit at the time and followed Rae as she left a psychiatric hospital and reconnected with her friend Chloe (Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer), and Chloe’s gang.
Rae has many of the same concerns as all teenage girls – namely boys, boys and more boys – but all she really cares about is being normal or, at least, appearing to be so. My Mad Fat Diary remains frank, earthy and honest viewing years on, and Rooney is a revelation in what could have been a very tricky depiction of mental illness for another actress. The series is based on Rae Earl’s memoir My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary and was a launchpad for both Rooney and Comer. Ian Hart co-stars as Rae’s psychiatrist. (Three series)
