Like Alan Grant and Ian Malcolm before him, J.A. Bayona is rumoured to be returning to the island to direct the sequel to Jurassic Park Rebirth.

According to The Hollywood Reporter the director of 2018’s $1.3 billion grossing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has emerged as the favourite to inherit the Universal sequel following the departure of Rebirth‘s Gareth Edwards due to those pesky old “creative differences”.
The story suggests that Universal want someone familiar with the franchise to take the reins, and Bayona fits that bill having made Fallen Kingdom one of the most beautiful looking and creatively unique entries in the series so far, while also grossing a huge amount of dino-dollars in the process. Since then he has worked on Amazon’s blockbusting Middle-Earth series The Rings of Power, and directed the critically-acclaimed Academy Award nominee Society of the Snow.

While Jurassic World Rebirth still grossed $869 million at the global box-office, the response to the seventh installment in the decades old franchise was decidedly mixed. Universal already has a sequel script by returning writer David Koepp (Disclosure Day) on ice, and it is believed that the Rebirth trio of Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey are also expected to return.
Universal don’t hang around when it comes to their Jurassic Park projects, so expect to hear more news on this in the immediate future. Until then let us know what you think of Bayona’s potential return by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
