How five climbers died on the Himalayan peak in 2021
Year: 2026
Certificate: 15
Climbing K2 is a serious business, and trying to ascend the 28,251ft peak in winter is seen as the last great prize in mountaineering. This harrowing documentary looks at what happened when the drive to climb the second-highest mountain on Earth became commercialised, and some of those trying to make it to the top simply weren’t equipped for the hardships it presented.
Director Amir Bar-Lev explores how five climbers died in 2021 as a result of bad decisions, commercialism, chaos and the brutality of nature. The climbers included a number of influencers, film crews and expedition clients, drawn to the mountain by the boredom of Covid and the notion of a touristy Everest-style achievement.
The result is a tragic, thought-provoking portrait of human determination and ego running headlong into the reality check of nature. (98 minutes)
