The ‘best place to raise a family’ in England is an easy 35-minute train ride from Birmingham, according to a new study.
Researchers for MoneySuperMarket scored local authorities on housing, childcare costs, education, access to healthcare and road safety.
Telford and Wrekin came out top, thanks to its ‘plentiful green spaces’ and above-average childcare affordability.

Known for its huge park, with a giant adventure playground, splash pad, lake and sand play, there’s lots of fun family things to do that don’t cost a fortune.
It is also close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ironbridge Gorge, lots of museums and lovely independent shops and cafes.
Telford beat York, Windsor and Maidenhead in the study.
“Telford and Wrekin topping the list for England highlights the importance of the everyday factors that can make family life easier, from access to green space and affordable childcare to having more room in the household budget,” said Kara Gammell, Life Insurance Expert at MoneySuperMarket.
“It’s a reminder that quality of life isn’t defined by one measure alone, but by a combination of factors that help families thrive.”
With an average house price of £216,685 and average council tax of £2,256, Telford scored highly for housing costs compared to other areas.
It’s also very commutable for people working in Birmingham.
There’s a direct train from Telford Central to Birmingham New Street that takes just 35 minutes.
To drive, the commute takes around 45 minutes, traffic permitting, via the M54 and M6.
Not far from the Welsh border, it also makes it easy for family holidays too, being just 45 minutes from Welshpool.
The scenic River Severn is nearby for walks and the famous Wrekin hill is just five miles west of the town, on the gateway of the glorious Shropshire Hills.
