We’re hardly short of stunning locations for a leisurely stroll, a dog walk, or simply some tranquil time immersed in nature here in the south west. But travel just a little further afield and you’ll find a beautiful nature reserve, boasting a lake, walking trails, and a wealth of activities, offering everything you could want in a single destination — and it’s just over an hour’s drive from Bristol.
Parc Bryn Bach in Blaenau Gwent is a sprawling nature reserve encompassing 340 acres of woodland and grasslands, a 36-acre lake, and a host of things to see and do. With free parking and something to suit all ages, it’s well worth the trip.
Whether you’re travelling by car or hopping on a train followed by a short bus ride, getting there is straightforward. Its peaceful, well-maintained trails make it a firm favourite amongst joggers, dog walkers, and those simply seeking a breath of fresh air.
Visitors can enjoy a dog-friendly café, mini golf, go-kart hire, and a mountain bike trail. Water enthusiasts are also well catered for, with canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding all available on the lake.
Further activities include geocaching, archery, and survival skills sessions. Anglers are welcome too, though day tickets must be purchased from the visitor centre, and a rod licence is required, reports Wales Online.
The lake serves as home to an array of waterfowl, including ducks, swans, and Canada geese. While many migrate south during the winter months, some remain year-round, and springtime brings the delightful sight of newly-hatched chicks taking to the water.
The park’s website states: “Set in the heart of Tredegar in south east Wales, Parc Bryn Bach (Bryn Bach Park), offers a warm welcome and plenty of outdoor activities for all ages and abilities.
“As a local nature reserve, the park boasts 340 acres of stunning grass and woodland including a 36-acre lake and includes a number of nature trails and an interactive sculpture trail where children can find out more about the local wildlife.
