Former Strictly Come Dancing professional Gorka Marquez has provided an update on his relationship with fiancée Gemma Atkinson, as speculation continues about when the couple will tie the knot.

Gorka, 36, first met Gemma, 41, during the 2017 series of Strictly Come Dancing, while both were partnered with different celebrities. Gorka was paired with singer Alexandra Burke, while Gemma danced with Aljaz Skorjanec.

Despite this, romance blossomed, and nine years later, the couple, who became engaged on Valentine’s Day 2021, share two children: seven year old Mia and three year old Thiago. In the five years since their engagement, much has evolved for the pair.

Alongside welcoming their second child, they’ve launched a successful podcast entitled Lost In Translation, while Gorka has made a significant career shift.

For him, this meant departing Strictly Come Dancing after a decade on the show to dedicate more time to his family, while also pursuing other aspects of his dancing career, including serving as a judge on Spain’s equivalent of Strictly, Bailando Con Las Estrellas.

Speaking about the advantages of stepping back from Strictly, Gorka told Heat magazine how freeing the decision had been. He said: “It’s nice to have more time together with the children and with Gemma, instead of ‘Hi, I’m going to work’, or ‘Hi, I’m going to the show’ like passing ships.”

Beyond sharing updates about positive developments in his personal life, Gorka also fielded a question about whether he and Gemma would be walking down the aisle anytime soon.

In response, he teased: “Maybe. Just keep waiting and we’ll see.”

This is not the first occasion on which Gorka and Gemma have touched upon their lengthy engagement, with Gorka confessing on an episode of the podcast he co-hosts with his fiancée: “I don’t think I want to get married.”

Shortly afterwards, Gemma revealed she too had certain reservations about making things official, saying: “Everyone I know who has got married has ended up getting divorced, apart from my sister.”

Gorka went on to shed some light on how the couple felt about their current situation, explaining: “We are fine like this, we have two children, marriage is just a document, for a legal thing. You see people together for 15, 20 years, they get married then divorced one year after.”

While no firm date has been set for their wedding, the pair stopped short of ruling it out altogether. Gemma suggested that, should they eventually tie the knot, it would be a far more intimate occasion, particularly after attending a friend’s wedding with around 140 guests.

She elaborated: “You’re essentially hosting the day. It’s your wedding, but you are hosting everybody else. That’s why when we do ours, it would need to be smaller!”.
