Legendary actress Sowcar Janaki, one of the most respected senior artistes of Indian cinema, died in Chennai on Friday due to age-related ailments, a hospital source said.
She was 94. She breathed her last at 1.59 pm.
Her trailblazing career spans seven decades of legacy defined by immense versatility, shifting seamlessly from a golden-age leading lady to a revered actress in the Indian film industry.
A Storied Career in Indian Cinema

Born as Sankaramanchi Janaki, she was married to Sankaramanchi Srinivasa Rao. She is survived by three children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
She has acted in over 400 movies in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam for over seven decades.
She was conferred the Padma Shri by the government in 2022 in recognition of her distinguished and lifelong contribution to Indian art and cinema.
Actress Kasturi said on X, “Can’t believe Sowcar Janaki gaaru is no more. What a spitfire she was ! 95 years young. We lose another legend. Om Shanti. I spoke of her glowingly just few days ago – she was not well, hoped she would stage a fighting comeback… my sincere condolences to her family.”
The veteran actress is famous for her depicting emotional depth and had portrayed strong-willed, modern, and highly witty woman roles. She smashed the mould of suffering woman stereotype of her era.
She was active from 1950 to 2023, performing across generations of cinema, commanding screen presence alongside iconic personalities like NTR, Sivaji Ganesan, MGR, Gemini Ganesan, and Rajkumar. As she aged, she reinvented herself as a sought-after grandmother and matriarch.
Her breakthrough was in the 1950 Telugu film Shavukaru, which earned her the tile ‘Sowcar’.
Her Baaga Piravinai (1959) alongside Sivaji Ganesan was a landmark drama in which she played a deeply devoted wife supporting her physically challenged husband.
In Paarthiban Kanavu (1960), she showcased her range by depicting two starkly contrasting lookalike characters.
Paava Mannippu (1961), Iru Kodugal (1969), and Baama Vijayam (1967) in which she displayed her incredible, sharp comedy timing as a middle-class daughter-in-law obsessed with high-society glamour, were among her numerable hits.
Following her death, Sowcar Janaki’s mortal remains have been kept at Centaph Road in Teynampet in Chennai for her relatives, friends, and the public to pay their homage.
In a post on X, Tamil Nadu chief minister and actor Vijay expressed his grief.
He wrote, “I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of the veteran film actress Mrs Sowcar Janaki, who secured an indelible place in the hearts of fans across generations through her distinctive acting.”
Actor Kamal Haasan’s tribute to Sowcar Janaki left netizens nostalgic as he reminisced about working with the cinema icon in films.
“We have worked together in many films. She was the mother, I the child. The irreplaceable acting artist of South Indian cinema, Sowcar Janaki. She acted with all the heroes of that time. She was the preferred choice of my guru K Balachander. She has passed away. A maternal image has departed. I bid her farewell with tears,” Kamal Haasan posted.
Tributes from Political Leaders
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and YSRCP chief Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday mourned the death of veteran actress Sowcar Janaki.
The CM said Janaki’s passing left him “shocked”.
“The sudden passing of veteran actress and singer Sowkar Janaki (94) has left me deeply shocked. Having acted in over 400 films and received numerous awards and accolades, Sowcar Janaki may have left us physically, but through the characters she portrayed, she will remain immortal in our hearts forever,” said Naidu in a post on X.
“I pray that the Almighty grants peace to her soul. I extend my deepest condolences to her family members,” he added.
Similarly, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan expressed sorrow over Janaki’s death and prayed for the peace of her soul, said an official press release.
He recalled that Janaki had acted in Telugu, Kannada and Tamil movies, essaying diverse roles. The Jana Sena founder conveyed his sympathy to Janaki’s bereaved family.

Former CM and YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy described Janaki’s demise as an “irreparable loss” to the Telugu film industry.
“In a remarkable career spanning more than seven decades, Sowcar (Sankaramanchi) Janaki acted in over 400 films across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam, leaving an indelible impression on generations of cinema lovers,” said Jagan in a YSRCP press release.
He recalled that Janaki had played leading roles opposite legendary actors like NT Rama Rao, A Nageswara Rao, MG Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan
He noted that she won widespread admiration for her natural performances in diverse roles as a mother, grandmother and elderly matriarch.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy, mega star Chiranjeevi, several other leaders and film personalities also condoled the demise of legendary actress Sowcar Janaki on Friday.
Janaki, who began her career in childhood by portraying various roles in plays, left an indelible mark on the film industry for nearly seven decades, the chief minister said.
Janaki, who acted in nearly 400 films in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi, enthralled audiences with her performances, he said.
Praying that God grant her eternal peace, the CM conveyed his condolences and deepest sympathies to her family members and fans, the Telangana CMO said in a post on ‘X’.
Kishan Reddy said Janaki carved out a unique place on the Telugu silver screen with her stellar performances.
She radiated Telugu essence on the silver screen for four generations, he said in a post on ‘X’.
Expressing sadness over Janaki’s death, Chiranjeevi said her illustrious cinematic journey, which began with the film Shavukaru, spanned nearly seven decades across Telugu, Tamil, and several other languages.
With her natural acting, she breathed life into diverse roles and earned an indelible place in the hearts of audiences, he said.
Renowned actor and TDP MLA N Balakrishna recalled that she was first female lead opposite his legendary father N T Rama Rao.
Shavukaru was NTR’s first film as a hero, he said.
She came to be known as Sowcar Janaki with the film Shavukaru, he added.
The family of NTR shares a special bond with her, Balakrishna said, and that Janaki is possibly the only film artiste to have a 75-year-long journey.
Describing Janaki’s death as a personal loss to him, Balakrishna said he prayed for God to give courage to the bereaved family members.
