Ameerlog Review: Amateurish narration tests patience – Telugu Cinema

What’s “Ameerlog” about?

Sreenu, Mallesh and Rafeeq are three friends from a lower-middle-class background who live in a modest locality in Hyderabad. They spend most of their days without any clear direction until Geetha Akka (Vedha Jalandhar) offers Sreenu a job as an office boy at her workplace. Gradually, Mallesh and Rafeeq also find work.

Geetha’s colleague and boyfriend Ravi takes a liking to Sreenu after being impressed by his approach to a daawat. He suggests that Sreenu start a biryani point. What begins as a possible turning point in the friends’ lives eventually leads to a series of complications. How they deal with them forms the rest of the story.

Analysis

“Ameerlog” attempts to follow the familiar Deccan cinema template, blending Telugu and Urdu while placing a group of carefree, aimless youngsters at the centre of the story. There is a clear attempt to capture the local flavour, lifestyle and humour of Hyderabad’s working-class neighbourhoods.

The film, however, struggles badly with its writing and execution. It appears to draw from the template of films such as “Pelli Choopulu”, “Ustaad Hotel” and “Patang”, but it fails to develop a story or conflict of its own with enough strength.

The biggest problem is the lack of a proper narrative structure. For nearly two-thirds of the runtime, the film moves from one scene to another without establishing a compelling conflict or giving the characters a meaningful journey. There are conversations, everyday situations and attempts at humour, but very little actually happens. The biryani point, which should have been the central turning point of the story, arrives only midway through the second half. By then, the film has already tested the audience’s patience.

The writing frequently feels like an extended collection of casual conversations rather than a properly structured screenplay. Even some short films manage to establish conflict, character arcs and dramatic purpose more effectively. Here, the screenplay rarely builds momentum, and the direction lacks the control required to turn the local setting and youthful characters into engaging cinema.

The actors do make an effort to keep their performances natural and avoid exaggerated expressions. However, the weak characterisation prevents them from making a lasting impression. None of the central characters are written with enough depth or individuality to stay with the audience.

Vedha Jalandhar is good as Geetha, while Vishwender Reddy Kommidi makes an impression as Chacha. The supporting cast largely does what is required of them.

Smaran’s background score is effective and complements the film’s local flavour in places. The editing, however, is uneven and does little to improve the film’s sluggish narrative.

Bottom Line: “Ameerlog” has the ingredients of a Deccan-flavoured coming-of-age drama, but weak writing, a meandering screenplay and amateurish direction undermine the entire effort. The film takes far too long to arrive at its actual story and the execution ultimately tests patience.
