10 Strongest Autobots, Ranked by Physical Power

10 Strongest Autobots, Ranked by Physical Power

Physical strength means something very different when the subject is a Transformer. Autobots come in all sizes, from small Mini-Bots to giant robots the size of cities. So this is where the physical strength category comes in handy, because the strongest robot is not necessarily the biggest one.

Transformers G1 gives the Transformers impressive stats, like the ability to lift objects many times heavier than themselves. For example, Brawn can lift 190,000 pounds with his small frame, Optimus Prime can carry 4,000,000 pounds and Omega Supreme can lift an amazing 300,000 tons with his claws.

Ironhide Relies on Toughness More Than Muscle

Ironhide earned his reputation by getting hit and refusing to stay down. His G1 profile gives him a respectable Strength rating of 7, but the more revealing number is his Endurance rating of 9. The old Autobot can absorb punishment, which fits the character who routinely walks into battles looking like he has already survived three of them.

His weapons also suit that stubborn personality. Ironhide can fire superheated lead or supercooled nitrogen from his liquid-bomb system, but he is at his best when he closes the distance and simply refuses to go down. Put him beside Roadbuster and the difference becomes clear as Roadbuster brings more raw muscle while Ironhide brings the kind of toughness that makes a weaker punch feel like a temporary inconvenience.

Roadbuster Brings Wrecker Strength

Roadbuster’s G1 specs give him Strength 8 and Endurance 9, while his linear blaster fires a shot capable of penetrating two feet of concrete. His muscles are like an Autobot who finds the thought of a standard battlefield too tidy to take seriously. Even his alternate mode of a heavily-armed Wrecker looks more like a vehicle that drives through a wall than one that aims to avoid it.

The Wrecker’s personality is essential to the role, since Roadbuster actively enjoys the work that makes other Autobots miserable. He is not a picky fighter who always chooses the best part of the battlefield, but rather a brute who loves getting dirty and smashing. Springer has Strength 9, but Roadbuster’s Endurance, combined with his heavy armor and aggression, makes him one of the most fearsome bruisers among the conventional Autobots.

With a 9 Strength and Endurance rating, Springer looks built for the part. Springer has a huge physique, powerful arms and the kind of legs that let him launch himself into battle in enormous pogo-stick jumps.

Springer can become a tank-like vehicle for brute force, switch to helicopter mode for mobility and then return to a robot that looks perfectly happy settling things with his hands. The Transformers: The Movie helps sell the idea because Springer spends the Autobot City battle charging through Decepticon forces as though the battlefield personally offended him.

Ultra Magnus Has Serious Muscle Under the Armor

Most people remember Ultra Magnus as the stern commander who inherited the Matrix from Optimus Prime, but his physical profile deserves more attention. His G1 specifications give him Strength 10 and Endurance 9. That puts him in the top tier of conventional Autobot muscle before the truly gigantic characters enter the picture.

The armor explains why he looks so much heavier than Prime’s original truck configuration. Magnus carries an enormous armored trailer that becomes part of his robot form, giving him a much broader body than most Autobots. The Transformers: The Movie repeatedly throws him into situations where he has to absorb heavy punishment and he keeps charging forward even after the Decepticons leave him in pieces at Planet Junk.

Sky Lynx Combines Strength With Size

Sky Lynx gets his tens in all three of the abilities that define an autobot’s power, like their strength, endurance and speed. His enormous shuttle form plus the two other parts of his body also give him an impressive appearance. Moreover, his reinforced hull can withstand enemy bombardment and extreme temperature changes.

His body also looks like it grew from several transformers that didn’t know when to stop growing. The shuttle takes the form of the body which allows the lynx and the Dinobird to appear from it and give Sky Lynx a silhouette that makes other autobots look small. He did not get the benefit of being a transforming character like Optimus, Metroplex or Omega Supreme, but his strength and endurance are at the maximum level, which allows him to be one of the strongest autobots in the team.

Grimlock Nearly Matches Optimus

Grimlock is not just a character who boasts about his power without being able to back his words up. His G1 profile grants him Strength 10 and Endurance 10 and also names his strength as the second-best among the Dinobots, right after Sludge. Being a leader of Dinobots, Grimlock is one of the only Dinobots that’s on the same level as Optimus Prime and Megatron in direct combat.

His T-Rex mode provides the proof. His jaws can snap a four-foot steel cable or a Decepticon leg, while his energo-sword can cut a two-foot concrete wall in one stroke. His lack of speed and legendary ego prevent him from being an ideal all-around warrior, but he has few peers in terms of physical punishment, including his commander.

Optimus Prime Has a Four-Million-Pound Punching Bag

Optimus Prime holds a place as the strongest Autobot of his size for good reason. His original G1 profile gives him Strength 10, Endurance 10 and Skill 10, describing him as the largest, strongest and wisest of the Autobots. That combination of traits matters in the fact that Prime can put his strength to good use without the impulsiveness of Grimlock’s approach.

The original profile also gives Prime an enormous lifting capacity of 4,000,000 pounds that puts his physical output far beyond where the conventional Autobots can stand. He can separate into his Command module, Roller and Combat Deck as well. Adding an amusing complication to the fact that the parts of Optimus that aren’t technically his main body contribute to one of G1‘s most complete fighting machines.

Fortress Maximus Takes Strength Into Giant Territory

Fortress Maximus belongs to a different conversation from the standard Autobot bruisers. His G1 specifications give him the maximum Strength 10 and Endurance 10. While his transformations turn the same enormous body into a battle station and a city equipped with mortars, laser blasters, a photon rifle and its own communications and repair systems.

That size becomes much more meaningful when he faces Scorponok in the Japanese Headmasters material. Their confrontations feel like two enormous fortresses crashing into each other instead of the ordinary Transformers trading punches. Smaller Autobots operate around Fortress Maximus almost like personnel around a military installation.

Fortress Maximus’ strength profile does not include Metroplex’s famous 70,000-ton lifting feat. Although the combination of maximum strength, maximum endurance and an immense battle-station body makes Fortress Maximus one of the Autobot’s biggest heavyweights.

Metroplex Can Lift 70,000 Tons

Metroplex has a physical-strength figure that makes almost every ordinary Autobot look tiny. His G1 profile gives him Strength 10 and says he can lift 70,000 tons, which puts him in an entirely different class from Optimus Prime’s four-million-pound figure. His city mode provides the perfect visual explanation.

Metroplex does not turn into a truck or tank that happens to be large but becomes Autobot City, complete with repair facilities and defensive systems, then stands up and walks into battle. The funny part is that Metroplex’s personality does not match his physical scale at all. Since the giant Autobot can still feel like he is not contributing enough while possessing the strength to move 70,000 tons.

Omega Supreme Can Lift 300,000 Tons

Omega Supreme in Transformers comic

Image via Dreamwave Comics

Omega Supreme has the cleanest physical-strength feat in the entire group. His G1 profile gives him Strength 10, Endurance 10 and says his clawed arm can lift 300,000 tons, putting that one feat at more than four times Metroplex’s listed lifting capacity. The rest of Omega’s physical profile almost feels unnecessary after that number.

His bare strength can shatter a mountainside, his armor can survive enormous explosions and his plasma blaster can pulverize a twelve-foot steel cube. Yet his Speed rating of 3 keeps him trailing behind most of the other Autobots. That combination makes Omega Supreme wonderfully straightforward, as he may take forever to get across the battlefield, but once that claw closes around something, 300,000 tons says the argument is probably over.
