French crime drama about a quirky police psychiatrist
Year: 2022
Certificate: 12
In this quirky French crime drama, Matthias Bernardt (Marc Lavoine) is head of the Paris Police Psychiatric Unit with the power to decide whether people should be locked up in prison, or in a psychiatric hospital. He’s more than a little eccentric, with a dark sense of humour, but he is also calm and compassionate, has sharp instincts, and is challenged by his own psychological demons.
The show is fast and energetic, with Lavoine – a popular face in France who viewers might recognise from crime series Crossing Lines – an especially charismatic lead. French cinema fans will also want to watch our for Alain-Fabian Delon, the son of French icon Alain Delon (Le Samurai).
The series opens as a homeless man is brought to the unit, claiming that he and a friend were attacked by four characters from the commedia dell’arte, including Pulcinella, Pierrot and Harlequin. Bernardt senses something isn’t quite right, and when two bodies turn up, he’s proved correct. As chief of police Nathalie Fontaine (Barbara Schulz) warns him off, Bernhardt stages his own investigation, while his colleagues worry for his state of mind. (Six episodes)
