With multiple streaming services releasing new content every month, there’s no shortage of action or thriller series to binge. Those looking for a long evening in front of the TV may struggle to find ones that fit into a single night, however. Shows like Reacher and Lioness might be gripping, but they each require audiences to commit to several seasons to catch up. To be clear, they’re worthy undertakings. But sometimes, a short and quick viewing experience is just what the doctor orders.
And there are great thriller miniseries that fit those prompts, too. With their combination of fast pacing and short runs, they give audiences the perfect opportunity to devour an entire series in a single evening. From a political thriller with a moral predicament, to a heist story, to a surprising superhero adaptation, these titles will make that easy to do. You’ll blink and it’ll be morning.

‘Bodyguard’ (2018)

One of Netflix’s most compelling political thrillers, 2018’s Bodyguard offers the perfect weekend binge — and at just six episodes, it shouldn’t even take viewers the full two days to get through. Starring Game of Thrones alum Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes, the show finds Police Sergeant David Budd (Madden) tasked with protecting a controversial politician. He’s forced to navigate that responsibility with the reality that he’s opposed to many of her positions. It creates a delicious moral dilemma, which is balanced by non-stop suspense and action. The thrills start from the opening scene, and they keep coming throughout the miniseries’ run.
Watch This If: Conflicted characters appeal to you, especially when they raise deeper questions. Not only does Madden’s lead showcase the impact of PTSD, but his journey throughout Bodyguard also sparks discussions about surveillance and political corruption. It doesn’t have time to go as deep into its themes as I’d like, but it does bring them to the surface.
Skip This If: You’re looking for a more straightforward and likable action hero, want to escape timely political topics, or prefer thrillers that start off as a slow burn.
‘Kaleidoscope’ (2023)

Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito assembles a group of thieves for a heist in Netflix’s Kaleidoscope, which spends eight episodes chronicling the time leading up to the impossible infiltration of a security firm’s most secure vault, right before taking us through the fateful break-in itself. The non-linear timeline goes as far back as 24 years, making this an ambitious project. There are complicated motivations and desires at play among the main crew, which makes for an intense and character-centric viewing experience. There’s some great action, and audiences can count on twists. Kaleidoscope may have flown under the radar after its 2023 release, but it’s the ideal choice for a long evening at home.
Watch This If: Heist narratives suck you in every time — and the harder the job, the better. Kaleidoscope is also great for viewers who enjoy a good revenge focus or betrayal, and the willingness to let the story piece itself together is a must.
Skip This If: Non-linear storytelling loses you every time. Kaleidoscope is ambitious, but its structure could be confusing or simply too demanding for a binge.
‘Godless’ (2017)

Action thriller lovers who don’t mind a good Western series will appreciate Godless, which blends elements of all three genres masterfully. Set in the American West in the 1880s, the show follows outlaw leader Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels), as well as Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell), the protégé who betrayed him. Frank hunts down Roy, only to find a town run by women, all of whom seem committed to protecting him. There are the gorgeous landscapes and shootouts you’d expect from a Western, and the latter bring the action and thrills. While not a strict action thriller, Godless deserves a place on any watchlist. And with its story unfolding across just seven episodes, you can finish it in one night, as long as you’re willing to stay up.
Watch This If: You don’t mind a blend of Western and action thriller, and you’re interested in fresh takes on the former. In a genre that’s typically dominated by men, Godless gives its female characters a proper chance to shine.
Skip This If: Westerns don’t draw you in, and you’re looking for a more modern story to work through.
‘Who Is Erin Carter?’ (2023)

Another seven-episode miniseries viewers can stay up late with is Who Is Erin Carter? The 2023 action thriller kicks off with a grocery store robbery, wasting no time throwing audiences into tense situations. Things get interesting when Evin Ahmad’s title character is identified by one of the robbers, causing the truth of her mysterious past to come out. This results in her being tracked down by more people with ill intentions, and there’s action and suspense to spare. It’s a genuinely fun thriller, and Ahmad’s performance sells it well.
Watch This If: You’re looking for a thriller with a kick-ass, complicated female lead, and you’re a fan of twisty narratives. Who Is Erin Carter? offers both as it unravels its heroine’s history.
Skip This If: You’re looking for a tightly woven plot that doesn’t push the boundaries of believability. This one definitely leans into unlikely turns and action at times, but it’s still an addicting watch.
‘The Last Panthers’ (2015–2016)

The Last Panthers is more crime drama than action show, but it still has thrilling action throughout. Another miniseries centered on a heist, this one opens with a diamond heist inspired by a group of real-life thieves dubbed the Pink Panthers. When the plan goes awry, The Last Panthers deals with the aftermath of that, which sends the fates of multiple characters crashing together. The series takes their stories beyond the initial crime and into a larger world of corruption and misdeeds that spans multiple countries. It’s worth a watch, even if it’s not as fast-paced and action-heavy as other options on this list.
Watch This If: You’re more interested in the why behind heists and what comes after than you are the actual undertaking. The Last Panthers is a unique heist thriller in that regard, offering a deeper exploration of both.
Skip This If: You’re looking for a miniseries with breakneck pacing and more spectacle. This one unravels slowly at times, and it has many moving pieces.
‘ZeroZeroZero’

Speaking of crime miniseries with an ambitious scope, ZeroZeroZero is a must-watch for anyone who frequents the genre. The series spans continents, tracking a large shipment of cocaine from production to delivery — and covering the surprises and complications that come with it. ZeroZeroZero is intense and realistic, and it makes for an intriguing binge. The action is limited, but it satisfies when it does show up. And the story comes together masterfully, giving this miniseries payoff that’s worth dedicating an entire night to reaching. It’s surprising it’s not referenced more, as it’s truly one of the better short crime thrillers out there.
Watch This If: A story that builds intensity as it goes doesn’t bother you, especially if it benefits from great acting and writing.
Skip This If: You’re looking for a smaller-scale, more personal thriller, or you want something heavy on action sequences.
‘Moon Knight’

I tried my best not to include series with major franchise connections on this list, as they require knowledge that goes beyond a single evening. Sure, you can watch those titles over the course of a night, but you’ll need to be caught up on everything else first. That said, there’s one MCU series that doesn’t demand such effort. That would be Moon Knight, Oscar Isaac’s six-episode Disney+ outing, which follows a man with dissociative identity disorder who also has extraordinary abilities granted to him by an Egyptian god. The main character consistently losing time allows the MCU series to unravel with heart-pounding suspense, taking viewers on a ride to uncover the truth about Isaac’s lead. He’s also faced with stopping Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) from freeing the ruthless goddess Ammit, giving this high stakes and action. Viewers can work through it in six hours, and they don’t need knowledge of the MCU to do so.
Watch This If: You’re a fan of unconventional superhero stories, as Moon Knight fits the bill. It shows what Marvel is capable of when it leans into fresh storytelling.
Skip This If: You’re a purist when it comes to comic adaptations. Moon Knight has received criticism for some of the changes it makes in the jump from page to screen.
‘The Continental’ (2023)

Another thrilling miniseries that’s connected to a larger franchise — but can technically be watched completely on its own — is The Continental. While the John Wick show offers an origin story for Winston Scott and the titular hotel chain, its prequel status enables newcomers to jump in with relative ease. Those familiar with the John Wick movies will appreciate the connections, but The Continental offers things to love outside of that, including its atmospheric 1970s New York setting, conspiracy-driven plot, and epic fight sequences. For anyone looking to pass a weekend, its three 79- to 90-minute episodes will deliver.
Watch This If: You’re a John Wick fan who’s always wanted an expansion of the world and lore, or you’re totally unfamiliar with John Wick. (Those in the latter category may actually enjoy this more, as they’ll go in with fewer expectations.)
Skip This If: You’re expecting the quality of a John Wick film from this three-episode series, or you’re someone who prioritizes action over world- and character-building. This series attempts to juggle all three.
