Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indy Ends the Fight Early
Indiana Jones was supposed to have an elaborate fight with the swordsman, but Harrison Ford was suffering from dysentery during filming and didn’t want to spend days shooting it. The lengthy showdown was replaced by Indy simply pulling out his gun, producing one of the movie’s biggest laughs.
Midnight Cowboy (1969), “I’m Walkin’ Here!”
Dustin Hoffman has said a taxi unexpectedly entered their path while he and Jon Voight were filming on a real New York street. Instead of breaking character, Hoffman yelled at the driver as Ratso, producing the movie’s most famous line, although accounts differ over how much of the traffic encounter itself was planned.
The Shining (1980), “Here’s Johnny!”
Jack Nicholson’s most famous line from The Shining wasn’t in the screenplay. He improvised the reference to Johnny Carson while Jack Torrance was breaking through the bathroom door, and Kubrick nearly chose another take because he initially didn’t understand the reference.
Jaws (1975), “You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat”
The phrase began as an inside joke among the crew about an undersized support boat used during the notoriously difficult production. Roy Scheider worked variations of it into scenes, and the version delivered immediately after Brody sees the shark became one of cinema’s most famous ad-libs.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Star-Lord Drops the Orb
For years, James Gunn believed Chris Pratt had genuinely dropped the Orb while filming and simply stayed in character. Pratt later confessed that he had actually dropped it intentionally without telling Gunn, meaning the moment was unscripted, just not quite the accident everyone thought it was.
Pretty Woman (1990), The Necklace Box
Richard Gere snapping the jewelry box shut on Julia Roberts’ fingers wasn’t part of the screenplay. Director Garry Marshall later explained that he and Gere were pranking Roberts, whose surprised laugh was genuine and ultimately made the final cut.
