One of the biggest recent hits in Malayalam cinema, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, arrived in Telugu today. The film has already become a major success in Malayalam and is now looking to connect with Telugu audiences.
Let’s find out its merits and demerits.
Story
Justin (Nivin Pauly) runs a catering company. His girlfriend died years ago, and he has never been able to forget her. He remains a bachelor.
A family from another place moves into the house next to Justin’s. Ashley (Mamitha Baiju), the daughter of the family, slowly falls for Justin despite knowing that there is a considerable age gap between them. After a few months, she proposes to him.
Justin initially rejects her, pointing out their age difference, but Ashley remains persistent. He eventually falls for her too, and the two decide to keep their relationship a secret for some time. However, the arrival of Ashley’s uncle changes everything.
Performances
Nivin Pauly charms with his screen presence and relatable acting. He does not have to do any heavy lifting and simply plays Justin as a straightforward, ordinary man, relying mostly on casual expressions and natural body language.
Mamitha Baiju is terrific once again. She wins us over with her cute expressions and natural style of acting. Her chemistry with Nivin Pauly is one of the film’s biggest strengths.
The supporting cast, most of whom are not familiar to Telugu audiences, fit well into their respective roles.
Technical Aspects
The music is neat and works well for a romantic film like this. The cinematography is excellent and makes the film visually appealing.
However, the film has a lengthy runtime, and the editor could have trimmed several unnecessary scenes, particularly some of the silly sequences and fight portions in the second half. A tighter edit would have improved the overall impact.

Analysis
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, which was released two weeks ago, has emerged as a huge hit in Malayalam cinema. The film also gives Mamitha Baiju a double success in August.
Interestingly, both her August releases, Vishwanath And Sons and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, revolve around age-gap romances. In Vishwanath And Sons, her character has a nearly 20-year age difference with Suriya’s character, while the gap here is around a decade.
Director Girish A D, who earlier made Premalu, a film largely set in Hyderabad, once again tells a simple story by incorporating relatable situations and Gen-Z-style comic terms and dialogues.
The film also makes references to movie dialogues and aspects of local culture that may be difficult for Telugu audiences to fully understand. However, the genuinely funny moments work well even in the Telugu version.
The title Bethlehem Kudumba Unit refers to a church unit or a local area that comes under a particular church. The story revolves around two Christian families, with the central conflict arising not from religion or class differences but from the age gap between the lead pair.
The director establishes this difference through several jokes and situations. Nivin Pauly’s character is portrayed as being almost of an “uncle” age, while Mamitha’s character represents today’s younger generation, despite the actual age difference between them being only around ten years.
The film uses several comic situations to keep things entertaining.
Nivin’s sisters having a “girls’ drinking party” with Mamitha, Nivin’s younger brother making a short film, the jokes around filmmaking, and the constant references to Nivin’s age all add to the fun. At the same time, the film gradually develops the romance between the lead pair.
While much of the film is enjoyable and fun, it also suffers from pacing issues, particularly in the second half. Like many Malayalam films, it packs in too many subplots, and not all of them work equally well.
The subplot involving Hari, who is in love with Nivin’s younger brother, goes off track and tests patience at times. It could have been trimmed considerably. The climax, while justifiable within the story, also feels like an example of convenient writing.
Despite these shortcomings, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit works because of its feel-good romance, relatable characters and situations, fun moments, and the endearing chemistry between Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju.
It may not offer a unique plot, but it makes for a decent watch even for Telugu audiences.
