It’s been a good while since we last had anything new related to StarCraft release, but it looks like Blizzard is gearing up for a big announcement at BlizzCon later this week.
Head over to the official StarCraft website right now and you can see for yourself that the website appears to start glitching out with a message in the top left corner indicating an ‘Incoming Transmission’. There hasn’t been a new StarCraft release since the remaster of the original back in 2017, and with BlizzCon coming up this weekend, it’s certainly perfect timing for the reveal of a new title in the series.
What’s more, leaks and rumours from earlier this year seem to indicate that Blizzard could be taking the series in a bit of a new direction.
Fans have dug into the website’s code and found several references to the rumoured upcoming title when translated back from ASCII. There are references to the year 2575, which is around 67 years after the events of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void.
What’s more, there are also mentions of the location Roxara, which is where a Lunar Mining Complex is located. Theta Squadron is also mentioned, which is a Terran military force in the world of StarCraft.
What could the new StarCraft game be?
Earlier rumours seem to indicate that this new title won’t be a real-time strategy game like the previous entries in the series. Instead, it’s thought to be either a third or first-person single player and co-op experience in a similar style to Helldivers 2 and Space Marine 2.
It’s thought that Dan Hay, who previously headed up the Far Cry series at Ubisoft, could be at the helm of this new project. He moved over to Blizzard at the tail end of 2021, and has since served as vice president and general manager of the studio.
Whatever shape the new StarCraft game takes, we likely won’t have to wait long for it to be revealed. Blizzard is set to host the Opening Ceremony of BlizzCon at the Anaheim Convention Centre in California this weekend.
