Gripping US true crime story about the efforts of armchair sleuths and an overturned conviction

It’s easy to belittle the work of armchair sleuths, but even a stopped clock is correct twice a day – and stopped clocks don’t put nearly as much work into being right as Keen and Eileen Umbehr, the Kansas couple at the core of this addictive true crime story. It’s introduced by Joe Sexton, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who was on the receiving end of a seemingly endless stream of emails from Eileen (he recalls getting 25 in a single day) about the 2002 murders of Mike Sisco and Karen Harkness, for which Eileen thought Dana Chandler – Mike’s ex-wife – had been wrongfully convicted.
For two years, Joe largely ignored Eileen’s missives until, one day, she messaged to tell him that Dana’s conviction had been overturned – and he wrote her back with ‘Perhaps I should come see you’.
Sexton is like a caricature of an investigative journalist and is always highly entertaining whenever he’s on screen, while the details and twists in the case will have you gripped by the end of episode one – as will the sheer amount of effort expended by Keen and Eileen. For them, the pursuit of justice seems more like a matter of faith than a hobby. (Three episodes)
