The Omen (1976)
Several people involved with the production experienced disturbing real life incidents during and around filming, including lightning strikes and an actual dog attack. The stories became part of the movie’s eerie reputation, especially because the film itself revolves around an unusually dangerous child.
Poltergeist (1982)
The so called Poltergeist curse became one of the most persistent stories surrounding the production after several cast members died in the years following the film. The death of young actress Heather O’Rourke at just 12 years old made the story particularly haunting.
Apocalypse Now (1979)
The production became famously chaotic, with an enormous budget, severe weather, and difficult shooting conditions pushing the crew to the limit. Martin Sheen also suffered a heart attack during filming, leaving the production uncertain about whether its lead actor would survive.
Roar (1981)
The cast and crew of Roar worked alongside dozens of real lions, tigers, and other wild animals without the safety standards that would be expected today. Several people were seriously injured during the production, making the finished movie feel considerably more alarming once you know the animals were not trained performers.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
The famous production placed its actors through remarkably difficult working conditions, including heavy costumes, uncomfortable makeup, and dangerous materials. Margaret Hamilton suffered severe burns while filming her disappearance scene when a special effect malfunctioned.
Fitzcarraldo (1982)
Werner Herzog’s production became notorious for the extreme lengths taken to create its central images, including physically moving a massive steamship over a hill in the Amazon. The shoot was plagued by accidents, illness, and conflict, creating a production story almost as intense as the film itself.
