After starring in Enola Holmes 3 and In the Grey in 2026, Henry Cavill has a handful of anticipated projects to keep him and his fanbase busy in the near future. Between headlining the big-budget reboot of the sci-fi action franchise Highlander, voicing a key character in the sci-fi action video game Squadron 42, and starring in the Warhammer 40,000 TV series, viewers are going to see and hear Cavill in a much different light than they’re used to in the months to come.
Yet, with the potential to crush the competition as he did as the mighty Man of Steel over a decade ago, Cavill’s starring role in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Voltron could spawn a Transformers-like franchise that could persist indefinitely should it prove successful. Slated for a tentative 2027 release, it will be interesting to see how Voltron fares in the wake of Amazon’s recently announced release strategy.
‘Voltron’ is a Perfect Vehicle for Henry Cavill’s Heroic Action
After shedding his iconic Superman image in recent fare such as The Witcher, Enola Holmes, Argylle, and others, Henry Cavill is poised to return to the superhero realm in Voltron, Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action take on the classic ’80s cartoon. Cavill will portray King Alfor, the ruler of planet Altea, determined to prevent the evil Zarkon (Sterling K. Brown) from destroying the universe. To keep the cosmos safe, King Alfor used a rare comet to fashion five robotic lions that, when combined, form one Voltron, a humongous humanoid robot built to protect the universe.
Once a tragedy befalls King Alfor, the story focuses on the five human pilots who control the robotic lions, with each possessing their own specialty. King Alfor’s heroism extends to advising his daughter, Princess Allura (yet to be announced), and keeping her safeguarded as Zarkon continues his wave of destruction. The role gives Cavill the chance to play a loving father who channels his heroic benevolence as a guiding light for his daughter, allowing her to realize her potential and work with her teammates to defeat Zarkon and accomplish incredible missions he could never complete alone.
Between King Alfor’s altruistic sacrifices to save the universe and the massive shapeshifting robots coming together to do battle, Voltron has a real opportunity to find a creative sweet spot and hit the bullseye between what made Man of Steel and Transformers such mega-popular, franchise-spawning blockbusters. But it still begs the question: can Cavill’s immense popularity help turn Voltron into a streaming hit? Or does the movie need a theatrical release in this day and age to really move the needle?
When & How Will ‘Voltron’ Be Released?
Considering Voltron director Rawson Marshall Thurber’s theatrical track record with The Rock’s Central Intelligence, Skyscraper, Red Notice, and others, playing the upcoming action movie in theaters seemed to be the most logical choice for success. Instead, Amazon MGM Studios announced in May 2026 that Voltron would stream exclusively on the platform, robbing viewers of the chance to see the mega-robots form as one on as big a screen as possible. Although a release date has yet to be announced, the movie is in post-production and expected to be released sometime in 2027.
For such a well-proven IP that has mounted a loyal fanbase since the 1980s, it’s a real wonder why Amazon MGM Studios decided that Voltron would skip theaters and stream exclusively on the platform. Perhaps the underperformance of Masters of the Universe had something to do with it. Although fans were surely discouraged by the news, it’s worth noting that there have been several recent star-driven action hits that bypassed cinemas and found great success as streaming exclusives, be it Road House, Hit Man, Damsel, Trigger Warning, and others that eclipsed well over a million viewing minutes.
That’s to say, with Cavill leading, additional cast members Rita Ora (Witch Haggar), Nathan Jones (Super Soldier), Roberto Zenca as Galran Emperor, Daniel Quinn-Toye as Keith, and others, fans shouldn’t shy away from Voltron when it streams on Prime Video in 2027. With the massive size of TV screens these days, the upcoming actioner has the proper star and source material to deliver a spectacle at home as thrilling as anything on the big screen.
