Fans are only just discovering that the platform has received a major feature Netflix doesn’t have

Disney+ have quietly updated their streaming platform with a major shake-up. As part of it, a new feature that fans have been asking for, for years, is now a reality.
The company has introduced ‘playlists’ for a number of titles including some of its most popular series, movies and genres. It allows a user to select either a specific show, film franchise or genre such as true crime and put it on shuffle, much like many do when playing songs on Spotify.
So for example, you would select The Simpsons playlist and it would begin to play randomised episodes across all 38 seasons. This also does not impact your continue watching, so you would not lose your place in your latest binge watch.
At the time of writing, current playlists on offer include The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, Modern Family, Pixar movies and true crime. There are even options for music videos, children’s shows, anime, sports documentaries and reality TV.
Fans can even play a selection of adult animation shows on a single playlist. It is believed that the line-up will be added to and changed regularly, included with seasonal content as well as the biggest franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars.
This should mean that fans will be treated to playlists with Halloween or Christmas only episodes, instead of users having to dig into their favourite shows and find each one themselves. The feature has actually been available to subscribers in the US since 2024 but now UK-based users now get the benefit too.
At the time the feature was introduced in the States, Alisa Bowen, President of Disney+ said: “Playlists are the latest example of how we’re providing the best value and experience for our subscribers every time they open Disney+.
“Whether it’s news, kids’ content, popular genres, hit TV shows or blockbuster films, there will be something for everyone in a lean-back viewing experience based on seasonality and interest.”
Some fans hope that the feature will be improved further. Many have asked that Disney includes the ability for users to create their own custom playlists.
Fans have been asking for this feature for years, with many threads on Reddit and posts on social media, dedicated to them requesting it be introduced.
Meanwhile many TV critics and fans alike have reacted positively to the update. One shared online: “Disney+ just got a new streaming feature that Netflix doesn’t have and can’t beat. It’s been a long time coming.”
Another shared: “OMG Disney Plus added a playlist where they throw a random episode from some series you’ve watched at you and it works perfectly with sitcoms FINALLY I always wanted a feature like that.”
