A “beautifully crafted” period drama, much like the hit Sherlock films, has landed on Netflix with Edward Norton delivering a charming starring performance.
The Illusionist is a 2006 romantic mystery film directed by Neil Burger and starring Norton, Paul Giamatti, and Jessica Biel. Based on Steven Milhauser’s short story, it is often compared to Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige,it also takes on the same themes as the cerebral but lively Sherlock films.
Set in Vienna in the late 1800s, the film follows a mysterious stage magician, Eisenheim (Norton) who uses his abilities to reunite with his childhood lover, Sophie (Biel), a woman of higher social standing engaged to the cruel Crown Prince Leopold.
Chief Inspector Uhl (Giamatti) investigates Eisenheim for fraud as the charismatic magician stages increasingly bizarre acts.Uhl realizes that Eisenheim is far more intelligent than he seems in a twisty, turny period drama that promises to entertain and delight.

Another reviewer said: “This is based from the short story by Steven Milhauser. The description of Eisenheim in the story almost matches Norton’s depiction in the movie.
“Norton does a great job in playing a magician—he’s believable, from his hairstyles, beard, and expressive eyes. Jessica Biel did a great job in acting as his love interest, there was a certain chemistry between her and Norton in their scenes.”
One IMDb reviewer praised Norton’s performance. They wrote: “I am a long time fan of the old theatre magicians and have been fascinated by the wave of spiritualism that swept both continents around the turn of the last century. This movie plays off those real life happenings, with the added twist of court and political intrigue.
“The movie is lush – as a period piece should be – with terrific performances from a true ensemble cast. Edward Norton has the charismatic gaze that makes you believe in every thing he does. Jennifer Biel is tragic and compelling as a woman trapped by society and dubious duty. Paul Giamatti – who seems to be in every other movie these days – is wonderful as a conflicted man unsure of whom he serves.
“Rufus Sewell, as the Crown Prince Leopold, is that man, and he embodies the boo-hiss villain. Vain and driven, he is larger than life and not one to cross, as the illusionist comes to find out. The music of Philip Glass fits the scenes and add just the right amount of tension. Plus the horses are very old world with large hooves and a heck of a lot of presence. A compelling and beautiful film. “
