It’s a weird time to be a Doctor Who fan. While the beloved British sci-fi instruction is currently in a regeneration period – with the latest iteration of the show coming to a somewhat unceremonious end, and the property put out to tender for a fresh take – there are still 60-plus years of TARDIS adventures for Whovians to revisit in the meantime. And one of the very best Nu-Who adventures is getting a whole new feature-length re-edit this November, with additional material that’s never before been seen.
The BBC has confirmed that two-parter ‘The Satan Pit’ (with its predecessor ‘The Impossible Planet’) is getting a cinema release in a new ‘Extended Movie Cut’. The two part episode, roughly totalling 90 minutes in its televised form, was part of Series 2 of the revived show, featuring David Tennant’s Doctor and Billie Piper’s Rose – with a dark story in which the duo meet alien slave race the Ood, experience some unsettling possession aboard a deep-space station, and eventually come face-to-face with… well, we don’t want to spoil it, but it is called The Satan Pit, so use your imagination.
The TV episodes were written by Matt Jones and directed by James Strong – and the BBC’s Charlie Lowe confirms that the new cut “brings together restored deleted scenes and other material that never escaped the cutting room floor, creating an extended version of the story”.
Doctor Who: The Satan Pit will be getting a cinema release on Doctor Who Day (that’s November 23, for anyone without a Sonic Screwdriver), which should hopefully keep fans happy while the future of the show is figured out.
