If you’ve been following the news, you’ll know that we’re in for a wild winter weather-wise, with the government even going as far as to encourage people to stock up on essentials to survive a few days without power or water.
So now feels like the perfect time to try out the BLUETTI FridgePower – a power station aimed specifically at keeping a fridge running when/if you lose electricity.
The slim, white appliance is designed to support an appliance like a fridge that draws relatively little power most of the time but requires a higher burst when the compressor starts. This head-scratcher means that your average power station is not well-suited to keeping your food cool.
The FridgePower is just 75mm thick, so it can live happily on top of your fridge, and it also has the flexibility to run on its side. It offers the familiar combination of AC outlets, USB connections and DC outputs found on BLUETTI’s other power stations, so you’re not restricted to powering a fridge. Phones, laptops, lights, networking equipment and other small appliances can all be kept running from the same battery.
It’s designed to sit there, ready to jump in instantly if you lose power. With just the main unit, you’ll get around a day of fridge coverage, which you can extend by adding extra power packs.
The unit has a small display, but the main way you’ll be keeping tabs on the FridgePower is via the Bluetti app. It’s very simple to set up, and the app is very user-friendly and, more crucially, reliable.
Solar charging is particularly appealing here. Pair the power station with suitable solar panels, and you can generate electricity during the day while reserving stored energy for the evening or periods of poor weather.
As with any solar generator, actual charging performance depends heavily on panel size, sunlight and conditions, so it shouldn’t be assumed that the theoretical maximum will be achieved every day. Nevertheless, the combination of battery storage and solar input makes the FridgePower considerably more versatile than a conventional mains-only backup solution.
Portability is relative to a high-capacity power station. You can move the FridgePowe, but it’s not something you’ll necessarily want to carry around like a conventional power bank.
Although I’ve been using it exclusively at home, there’s nothing stopping you from using it in motorhomes, caravans, and static camping setups, where I’d imagine the slim design could be very useful.
The BLUETTI FridgePower is an interesting take on the portable power station, putting refrigeration and emergency backup firmly at the centre of its design. Its ability to handle the changing demands of a fridge, combined with multiple outputs and flexible charging options, makes it a particularly practical choice for keeping essential equipment running when the lights go out.
It’s not cheap, but if you’re in a position to tap into solar power it might even save you money in the long run.
