Early in the evening of Saturday 8 August 1970, one of the most uniquely talented singers of the age was sitting in a bar called Vahsen’s, Port Chester, a village situated in the affluent environs of Westchester County, 30 miles north-east of midtown Manhattan.

The singer was Janis Joplin, an artist inspired by the likes of Bessie Smith, Lead Belly and Big Mama Thornton, who melded blues, soul, gospel, country and rock into a radically distinctive sound.
