Dennis Haskins has died at the age of 75, his agent has confirmed. The actor was best known for his role as head teacher Mr Belding in 90s sitcom Saved By The Bell.
His longtime agent, Jay Schachter, described his death as a “tragic loss”. In a devastating tribute he said: “Everyone loved Mr. Belding and those of us who got to know Dennis loved him even more. He was a great person, and he loved, I mean absolutely LOVED his fans.”
He continued to tell Variety: “He always had time for them, no matter what. He was my client and dear friend for over 20 years, and I will miss him terribly. I’m heartbroken.”
Haskins starred in almost 90 episodes of the hit teen sitcom between 1989 and 1992. He starred alongside Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dustin Diamond, Lark Voorhies, Dennis Haskins, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Elizabeth Berkley and Mario Lopez.
He later continued the role in the spin-off series Saved By The Bell: The New Class, as well as the TV movie titled Saved By The Bell: Hawaiian Style.
Haskins also starred in a number of other films and TV shows. This included A Million Ways to Die in the West and Jennifer Falls.
Fans were quick to pay tribute following the news. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one user wrote: NOOO… America’s Principal for us 90’s kids MR. BELDING HAS DIED AT 75. This one stings.
“Saved By The Bell raised a lot of kids and taught them incredible life lessons. Dennis Haskins passed yesterday. He was from Chattanooga, TN. Rare fact most people don’t know: before he was Belding he was a music manager and concert promoter. Booked Tom Jones and Gregg Allman. He leaves behind his son Dustin. God Speed Mr. B.”
Another said: “This app can be a rough place. But it’s also how I struck up a friendship with Dennis Haskins.
“That dude was on the Dukes of Hazzard in his youth and spent the last decade+ appearing at Minor League games & hitting karaoke bars after. He knew a good time. Rest easy, Mr. Belding.”
On Instagram, Dimples Karaoke in California also shared a tribute. Haskins was a regular at the former establishment.
The venue wrote: “Dennis was a staple at Dimples. A lot of people thought he owned it, but he didn’t. He just loved the place and its people. He enjoyed singing for people, meeting them, and taking selfies with his fans.
“Dimples closed down about 11 years ago, and people still associate him with his beloved ‘second home.’ He was known to most as Mr. Belding from Saved by the Bell, but to us, he was much more than that.”
“Late last night, that journey ended for him. He is now at peace and is probably entertaining the people in the sky. Just know that if you tried to reach out to him in the last few years, I did read your messages to him, and you were heard.”
