Long before digital DIY culture became standard practice, Gregory Douglass was quietly building his own world. Writing at the piano, releasing records independently, and touring relentlessly, he cultivated an exceptionally devoted fanbase. It was an authentically symbiotic relationship built on mutual trust long before modern algorithms dictated artistic success.
Looking back over his trajectory, Douglass notes that while his early career was motivated by traditional notions of success, he eventually realised the true reward lay in learning to love what he had already created and appreciating the person he became through that process.
Now, Douglass is preparing to release “AMATEUR,” his first album of original work in nearly a decade. Unraveling as a series of standalone singles ahead of its full release in November, the album promises to explore queer identity, sexuality, and community, confronting the delicate intersections of love, shame, and self-acceptance.
The latest taste of this era arrives in the form of a delicate, unexpected cover of Tori Amos’ ‘Tear In Your Hand,’ originally from her 1992 album ‘Little Earthquakes.’
Despite Amos being one of the most important influences of Douglas’ vocal and songwriting identity, this marks his first time officially covering one of her tracks. He treats the song with reverence, preserving the emotional spirit of the original while reinterpreting it through his own singular artistic lens.
Where Amos’ original possessed a distinct nineties alt-pop style, Douglass tried something different, giving the piano arrangement the spotlight and filling the space with a slow-burning melody. Musically, his voice plays an important role. He possesses a remarkably subtle dynamic range, shifting effortlessly from conversational verses into powerful vocal arcs during the track’s peak. The resulting soundscape is expansive, capturing a balance of grief and hope.
For Douglass, ‘Tear in Your Hand’ is both a tribute to Tori Amos, whose songwriting had a formative impact on his own musical identity, and a deeply personal reflection on his own life transitions.
