Suella Braverman appeared on Good Morning Britain to promote her new memoir, as she spoke about migration and her family’s journey.
Kate Garraway has gone viral for her direct question to Suella Braverman.
Kate was hosting Good Morning Britain with Richard Madeley on Thursday, 1 October, when they spoke to the former Conservative politician, who defected to MP earlier this year.
Rather than politics, Braverman was on the show to promote her own memoir, Patriot: Empire, Betrayal and Hope. She was echoing her thoughts from the book on her own heritage and family journey, when Kate probed her on her views on migration.
Braverman had been describing how her ancestors had moved to Mauritius from India, during a wave of migration in the 1800s.
She said she wrote the book to challenge the “popular narrative that the British empire was evil and oppressive and that British history is something to be ashamed of”.
She claimed that the British empire had “hugely benefitted” her family, when Kate directly asked her: “So you’re pro-migration?”
The presenter was hailed for her response, with one viewer saying: “Kate doing god’s work,” as another called the question “genius”, reports Wales Online.
Others called out Braverman’s apparent hypocrisy, with one writing: “In other words, “now that I’m here, close the doors”. Another said: “Will she be setting up a GoFund account next? Reeks of hypocrisy, a deep lack of introspection, a book sale, cultural denial & inauthenticity.” Someone else wrote: “Total. Utter. Humiliation.”
Elsewhere on Thursday, Braverman’s Conservative jibe on Question Time appeared to backfire when panellists clapped back as she slammed her former party.
As she discussed her take on immigration, Braverman said: “The question about Englishness has arisen because of the utter failure by the Conservative government on mass immigration.”
Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh clapped back, saying: “You were in the conservative government Suella,” while the Conservative shadow business secretary Julia Lopez rolled her eyes as she reminded Braverman of her former position as Home Secretary.”
Braverman responded: “Thank you for raising that, it is the very reason I left the Conservative party because they utterly betrayed the British people on their promises on legal migration. I battled from within for years to cut visas and I was blocked.”
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
