A Coventry pub has been named one of the best places in England to have a pint.
The Old Windmill has been named in the list by global travel site Big 7 Travel. The city centre pub – the oldest in Coventry – was ranked in 16th place out of 30.
The Victoria in Birmingham also made the list with judges remarking on its characterful interior and a beer selection designed to appeal to cask ale enthusiasts, craft beer drinkers and traditional bitter fans.
When it comes to the Old Windmill, judges said: “The Old Windmill is a brilliant example of how a pub can be the beating heart of a city’s history.
“As Coventry’s oldest pub, dating back to 1451, it doesn’t need gimmicks or a big refurb to impress, the building itself tells the story, and that’s exactly the kind of authentic character we were looking for when putting this list together.”
The full listing for the Old Windmill in the pub reads as follows: “The Old Windmill is Coventry’s oldest pub, with the building dating to 1451.
“The timber-framed building on Spon Street was originally known as The Windmill until the 1840s, when the ‘Old Windmill’ became a more popular name for the boozer, and it has retained this ever since.
“The Old Windmill is the type of historic pub where the building does most of the talking – enjoy a pint in the archaic surroundings, where you get the feeling that the pints have flowed in here for centuries and generations before you’ve taken your seat inside.”
