The Koreatown Oddity – real name Dominique Purdy – has shared his fourth album, ‘Purdy’, out via on Stones Throw.
On ‘Purdy’, the Los Angeles rapper soundtracks a knight’s first battle on ‘Balance Beam’, documents the cultivation of a beautiful lawn on ‘Astro Turf’ and takes aim at petty rivalries and competition through the example of beefing sauce brands on ‘Ragu & Prego’, while also realising he’s part of something larger now he has a family.
‘Artist in the Painting’ takes that idea further, imagining an artist painting a landscape, then painting himself painting that landscape, and repeating the process until he becomes part of the picture he’s trying to understand.
In his own words, Purdy is “the artist inside the painting and the observer of the painting while the painting is being painted”. As he creates art and tries to understand the world, he sees himself both observing life and participating in it.
‘Purdy’ follows 2022 album ‘ISTHISFOREAL?’ which came two years after 2020 collection ‘Little Dominique’s Nosebleed’. Where that album was an origin story, and ‘ISTHISFORREAL?’ was a mockumentary and sketch show that played out like a mix of In Living Color and SNL.
‘Purdy’, however, is the sound of Koreatown stepping into a new phase of life without losing the curiosity that got him here.
Koreatown Oddity will perform at Stones Throw festival in LA later this month.
