New Delhi: Filmmaker Hansal Mehta shared a series of behind-the-scenes pictures from his series “Gandhi” on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
The series, which features Pratik Gandhi as the freedom fighter and his wife Bhamini Oza as Kasturba Gandhi, is produced by Applause Entertainment. It is based on historian and author Ramachandra Guha’s two books – “Gandhi Before India” and “Gandhi: The Years that Changed the World”.
Mehta uploaded the pictures on his Instagram handle on Friday and called him a man who “did not know where he was going but stumbled upon greatness”.
“Behind the scenes of #Gandhi. Only for today. He was a man who did not know where he was going. He stumbled upon greatness. Today, more than ever before, let’s understand his journey and celebrate his chosen path. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. 2 Oct 1869 – 30 Jan 1948 #GandhiJayanti,” the filmmaker wrote in the caption.
The project serves as the director-actor duo’s third collaboration after “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story” and “Baai”.
Siddhartha Basu is attached as historical consultant, factual advisor and creative consultant on the series, which is planned for three seasons, with the first season consisting of 8 episodes (each approximately 60 minutes).
Born on October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, known as Mahatma Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist. He was also the leader of the Indian Independence Movement and pioneered the philosophy of Satyagraha, civil disobedience through strict nonviolence.
He was shot dead on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse, who was later hanged at Ambala Jail. At least 30 films and documentaries have been made about Mahatma Gandhi, including Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi”, which starred Ben Kingsley and received eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Other notable projects are “Mahatma: Life of Gandhi”, a documentary by Vithalbhai Jhaveri and “The Making of the Mahatma”, which was directed by Shyam Benegal and revolved around Gandhi’s years in South Africa.
The release date for Mehta’s series isn’t out. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025.
