A supermarket giant has confirmed it is opening a new shop in Sutton Coldfield and is set to move into premises vacated by two other retailers.

Tesco has finally confirmed it will be moving into the Parade side of the town’s Gracechurch Centre, which BirminghamLive had indicated was a likely move last month.

The food retailer is moving into the now old Ryman stationers and Toys 4 You units, with both retailers having moved further down the same stretch of shops and set to be knocked into one.

A licensing application has appeared in the former Ryman’s window revealing a licensing application from Tesco Stores Limited.

The nationwide retailer has applied for permission to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises from 6am to midnight seven days a week.

And it has also applied to sell late night refreshments (indoors) from 11pm to midnight from Mondays to Sundays too.

The latter application is because any shop wanting to sell hot food or drinks after 11pm needs a licence to do so.

This does not apply to cold food or drinks.

When will it open?

And it looks like it will be 2027 before the new Tesco opens.

Asked for confirmation of the new Tesco store coming to the Parade, a spokeswoman for the retailer said: “We’re excited to be opening a new Tesco Express store in Sutton Coldfield next year.

“We look forward to welcoming customers to the store and will keep the local community updated with our plans as we get closer to opening.”

Tesco was asked on the future of its nearby store in Birmingham Road when the Parade one opens, and it did not indicate that it would be closing.

The move will be welcome for shoppers fancying a drink or a snack on the go, with Aldi moving from its Parade location, around the corner to Brassington Avenue next week.

And TG Jones (the old WH Smith’s) set to leave early in 2027, and take with it the town’s main Post Office.

Although there is hope a new home can swiftly be found for the Post Office, a fixture in the high street and a driver of footfall.
