Guitar heroes came in all shapes and sizes in the ‘90s. Mark Bryan might not have riffed as heavily as Cantrell, slung Superstrats like Morello, or oozed sex appeal like Navarro, focusing instead on good old-fashioned songwriting and a humble attitude on Hootie & The Blowfish hits like Let Her Cry, Hold My Hand, and Only Wanna Be with You.

“I remember saying we would have been happy if we could just sell out clubs all over,” Bryan says of their 1994 breakthrough success, Cracked Rear View. “We had no idea what was coming. It made me want to get better in order to live up to it – I was so green when we hit. I did a ton of woodshedding and songwriting, since I didn’t have a real job!”
