Medieval mystery starring Derek Jacobi
Year: 1994-1998
Certificate: 12
Written by Edith Pargeter under the pseudonym Ellis Peters, The Cadfael Chronicles followed the crime-solving adventures of a Benedictine monk in medieval England. With Derek Jacobi as Brother Cadfael, this 1990s TV adaptation was a big hit, following a character who, like Father Brown, showed great compassion, empathy and insight in the pursuit of justice.
The show arguably set the template for the cosy crime shows we know today, immersing readers in bucolic settings for mysteries with satisfying solutions. Brother Cadfael isn’t cynical or quirky, but quietly observant, and his emotional depth runs deep. It helps enormously having an actor of the calibre of Jacobi playing him, too. (Four series)
