Love them or hate them, Taylor Sheridan shows are some of the most popular on TV. As such, Netflix has pulled off a bit of a coup by landing “Mayor of Kingstown,” the oft-overlooked crime series that Sheridan co-created with Hugh Dillon. As of October 5, 2026, all four seasons of “Mayor of Kingstown” are available to stream on Netflix ahead of the fifth and final season’s release some time in the near future.
Sheridan has been pumping out infinitely watchable series ever since “Yellowstone” debuted in 2018 and dads across America propelled it to the top of the ratings charts. It has since become somewhat of a phenomenon, with Sheridan creating two prequel series and overseeing two spin-offs in the Luke Grimes-led “Marshals” and the Kelly Reilly/Cole Hauser sequel series “Dutton Ranch.” But that’s not all this prolific neo-Western impresario has been doing in the last decade. Somehow he’s managed to create and write numerous other series which have proved just as popular as his “Yellowstone” offerings. Sheridan has also played several characters across his TV series, just in case we were worried he wasn’t working hard enough.
One show that often gets lost in the shuffle, however, is “Mayor of Kingstown.” Despite the fact it stars an Avenger in the form of Jeremy Renner and has been running for four seasons, “Mayor of Kingstown” is somewhat of an outsider in the Sheridan-verse. But that could very well change now that it’s coming to Netflix.
Jeremy Renner tries to keep the peace in a corrupt prison town in Mayor of Kingstown
“Mayor of Kingstown” was a decade in the making for Hugh Dillon and Taylor Sheridan, who co-wrote the teleplay prior to Sheridan selling his 2015 film “Sicario.” After Sheridan’s directorial debut “Wind River” and the launch of “Yellowstone,” he and Dillon returned to their “Mayor of Kingstown” script. They sold it to Paramount, which ultimately debuted the first season on its own streaming service, Paramount+, in November 2021. Of course, that particular platform is far from the most popular, but Netflix long ago won the streaming wars, which should give the show a nice bump.
“Mayor of Kingstown” takes place in the titular Michigan locale, a fictional town that runs on one business and one business only: incarceration. Kingstown is crammed with correctional facilities — seven in a 10-mile radius to be specific — and it’s Michael McLusky’s (Jeremy Renner) job to try to keep everything running smoothly. Mike is an ex-con and the middle of three brothers who, along with the rest of his family, has been trying to keep the peace in Kingstown for decades by mediating between prisoners, guards, gangs, police, and politicians.
When the show begins, the oldest McLusky brother, Mitchell (played by “Lanterns” star Kyle Chandler), is the “Mayor,” which in Kingstown has nothing to do with being an elected official. “Mayor” in this context simply means you’re the head power broker and fixer for the McLuskys and their associates. Dianne Wiest plays the family matriarch, Mariam McLusky, alongside Taylor Handley as the youngest brother and police lieutenant, Kyle McLusky. Unfortunately, Chandler doesn’t stick around for long, but that turns out to be the impetus for four seasons of crime thriller action that frequently imperils the fragile peace in Kingstown.
Now is the perfect time to watch Mayor of Kingstown on Netflix
“Mayor of Kingstown” Season 4 premiered on October 26, 2025, and the show has since been renewed for a fifth and final season (an official release date is yet to be confirmed). That means now is the perfect time to catch up on one of Taylor Sheridan’s lesser-known series, even if it didn’t win over critics.
When the show first debuted, not everyone was convinced. “Mayor of Kingstown” Season 1 has a 31% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Danette Chavez of AV Club writing that Sheridan and his writers “deal so much in shades of gray and blurred lines that it becomes impossible to make out any of the larger themes.” That said, in his Chicago Sun-Times review, Richard Roeper praised Renner’s “ferociously powerful performance” and described the show as “a gritty, highly pedigreed, impressively photographed and well-acted series.” What’s more, Season 2 managed to push the critic score to 50%, while Season 3 improved upon that with a 78% score — though that is based on just nine reviews.
But Taylor Sheridan has never cared what critics think, so why should you? “Mayor of Kingstown” is at least worth a watch for Sheridan fans and may even win over a few Sheridan-verse holdouts. Filming on the fifth season kicked off in March 2026, so it shouldn’t be too long before it debuts on Paramount+. In the meantime, you’ve got four seasons to catch up on.
