Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s Digger probably isn’t the movie you expected it to be, but in the best way. And Warner Bros. hid the film’s real conceit to keep the surprises for audiences. Now that the movie is playing everywhere, let’s talk about the big twists in the movie.
All about the general premise for Digger
The movie stars Tom Cruise as Digger Rockwell, a powerful man who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he unleashed. The oil magnate has been extracting oil in Alaska and Greenland, but after ignoring warnings of methane beneath the field in Greenland, there’s an explosion that causes an ice shelf the size of Maryland to break off and float towards Europe. Despite warnings from environmental safety chief Dr. Nirav Ganesh (Riz Ahmed) that that ice will cause massive tidal waves across Europe, Digger and U.S. President Compson (John Goodman) decide to gamble on the possibility that winds could cause the ice to drift into the Atlantic Ocean and melt.
About 30 to 40 minutes into the movie, something happens that completely changes the reality of the film.

The first big twist in Digger
While Digger and the President are looking out the window during a chat, a tree outside the house falls over and a giant person comes into frame to fix it. We overhear chatter in the background and the reality of the movie becomes clear…
We are watching the final rehearsal for a play about Digger, called “Fossil Fuels.”
Tom Cruise, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, and much of the film’s cast actually are playing actors performing in the play. Tom portrays actor Curtis Markson, who is starring as Digger Rockwell.
Amid the drama happening backstage at the rehearsal, we learn that a big storm is happening outside in the real world and Curtis’ daughter has gone missing after boarding a flight.
The next big twist in the movie factors into that storyline.

All about the second twist in Digger
We learn early on in the movie that Jesse Plemons is playing a wealthy man producing the theatrical play. His character tells Curtis that he owns a security company that can help locate his daughter.
Later in the movie, Curtis has a breakdown near the end of the rehearsal, saying that the way they’re portraying the story is not how things would have happened in real life.
The director, played by Sophie Wilde, then makes a major reveal.
The events in the play are based on real life. Digger Rockwell was a real person and everything in the play happened. The play is a satire to help people cope with the trauma they endured 25 years earlier.
And then there’s another big reveal.
Jesse Plemons‘ character Kenny is actually the real nephew of Digger Rockwell and he decided to finance the play because it’s important to show how his own family’s greed caused a climate crisis.

How does the movie end?
We learn in the play that President Compson dies from his illness and his family and Digger’s family are exiled by the new president of the United States. They are placed on one of Digger’s old oil rigs and their access to supplies gets cut off.
Digger ends up jumping off the rig, into the water, committing suicide.
As the audience at the performance watches this scene, they erupt into a standing ovation, with some people even bursting into tears.
Backstage after the performance, Curtis finds out that Kenny has located his daughter and she’s going to safely land at home in a couple of hours.
After the cast finishes their curtain call, an alarm blares inside the theater before the doors are open to the outside. As the alarm goes off, the audience pulls out gas masks to cover their faces before going outside. The doors to the theater space open and reveal what the world outside looks like, 25 years after the disaster.
What are people saying about the movie?
Unfortunately, audiences and critics are all divided on the movie.
The reviews have been very mixed, with some critics calling it the best movie of the year and some saying it’s a “mess.” The film currently holds a 51% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences are enjoying it more at 71%.
The movie is not doing well at the box office and could lose hundreds of millions of dollars.
