Sree Vishnu’s unusual period entertainer Comrade Kalyan, directed by Janakiram Marella and produced by Venkata Krishna Karnati and Seetha Karnati under the banner of Skanda Vahana Motion Pictures LLP, is gearing up for its release on October 9.
After creating curiosity with its glimpse, teaser, and songs, the makers have now unveiled the theatrical trailer.
Set against the Andhra-Odisha border in 1992, the story follows Kalyan, a local theatre owner whose simple life changes when he falls for an Odia girl. Their romance runs into a language barrier, but things take a dramatic turn when the police begin hunting Kalyan.
The big twist reveals that Kalyan is a most-wanted Naxalite. He joins his gang in kidnapping a politician, demanding the release of fellow Naxalites who are in prison. The unexpected shift from romance to a politically charged conflict makes the story intriguing.
Despite the serious backdrop, comedy remains at the heart of the trailer. The first portion is filled with amusing situations, quirky characters, and entertaining exchanges before the proceedings gradually turn intense. Credit goes to director Janakiram for striking the right balance.
Sree Vishnu carries a character with multiple shades with remarkable ease. His natural comic timing, distinctive body language, and peculiar dialogue delivery immediately stand out.
Mahima Nambiar brings a refreshing presence to the romantic track, and her chemistry with Sree Vishnu looks appealing. Radhika Sarathkumar adds considerable fun as a passionate fan of Nandamuri Balakrishna.
Satya, Sudarshan, and the rest of the gang contribute well to the comedy quotient. Shine Tom Chacko adds seriousness and intensity as a Kerala-born police officer, while Upendra Limaye appears in another important role.
Sai Sriram’s cinematography beautifully captures the rural setting and helps establish the period atmosphere. Vijay Bulganin’s background score effectively shifts gears between comedy and tension.
The trailer makes it clear that Comrade Kalyan is not merely a straightforward comedy or romance. Beneath its colourful and humorous surface lies a serious conflict involving the police and the Naxalite movement.
With Sree Vishnu leading from the front and the trailer successfully balancing laughs with suspense and emotion, Comrade Kalyan looks like an interesting theatrical offering that could deliver a distinctive blend of entertainment and drama.
