Paramount Pictures and Hasbro are getting the gang back together by appointing Steven Spielberg as the primary creative producer for the new Transformers movie, which Michael Bay is in early talks to direct.

According to Deadline following the much-publicised merger creation of Skydance, Paramount are looking to Steven Spielberg to perform the kind of hands-on producer role he did for 2007’s Transformers, and it’s sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and that Michael Bay will return to roll out a sixth film featuring the robots in disguise.
Spielberg’s DNA was all over the first, and arguably best, Transformers movie, and despite retaining an executive producer credit on latter installments, was conspicuous by his absence as the franchise flatlined into a series of bloated CGI and diminishing returns. Sources tell Deadline that Spielberg will perform the role alongside long-time producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Paramount and Hasbro have attempted to kickstart the Transformers franchise before, but not with the kind of financial returns of the first few films. While Bumblebee ($467M WW) and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ($441M WW) were an uptick in quality from Bay’s last entry in the series, 2017’s lamentable The Last Knight ($605M WW), that film still grossed more than the reboot titles.
Reportedly Michael Bay’s return to the franchise was secured when the Bad Boys director read Jason Fuchs’ (It: Welcome to Derry) script and had a meeting with Spielberg earlier this week.
