Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper star in a romcom with a serious undercurrent
Year: 2012
Certificate: 15
Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper make their first of many on-screen appearances together in this offbeat romantic comedy. They have an easy chemistry, even if the relationship explored here is anything but easy. Pat (Cooper) has recently left a mental hospital. Having lost everything – his wife, his home and his job – after a violent outburst, he tries to see the positive, and focuses on reconciling with his wife.
Then, he meets Tiffany (Lawrence), a widow suffering from depression and intimacy issues, and through her forthright approach, the two spark up an uneasy connection. There is not an obvious happy ending in a film exploring mental illness, but the issues are tackled confidently, while still delivering what the audience expects from a romcom.
The film picked up eight Oscar nominations, but the only win was Best Actress for Lawrence. (122 minutes)
