What happens when drag queens, a runaway train and a disaster movie collide? That’s how you get the gloriously chaotic STOP! THAT! TRAIN! It’s a riotous, campy ride that embraces the absurdity of its premise while putting drag queens front and centre. But beneath all the silliness is something more significant. In a cinematic landscape where queer stories are often highly political, director Adam Shankman believes there is power in simply letting a film like this exist on its own terms.
“With great intention, I don’t discuss drag, I don’t address queerness, I don’t address religion, I don’t address race, I don’t address anything that could externally politicize the movie or distract from the silliness and the humour. Its existence is its own political statement,” Shankman tells FILMHOUNDS.
We sat down with Shankman to discuss STOP! THAT! TRAIN!, drag representation in film, how his background in dance has influenced his directing, and, naturally, what the next great drag disaster movie should be.
